I am Sharon Cannava, owner of Living Breathing Pilates, and I am passionate about the art and science of Classical Pilates. As a Pilates teacher and forever-student, I am inspired by movement education that is intelligent, dynamic, and unpretentious. The Pilates Method embraces the spectrum between focused rehabilitation and an advanced energizing workout guaranteed to challenge even the fittest among us. Pilates is adaptable and can be effectively modified to address your imbalances and weaknesses. Bottom line: Pilates works. Oh, and it’s fun, powerful, and feels great too! This was the true genius of Joseph Pilates.
I am a native New Englander living in lovely Mahwah, NJ with my husband and two rowdy sons. As a modern dancer, I trained at the Ailey School in NYC and graduated with a degree in Dance & Dance Education from NYU. When a friend encouraged me to study Pilates, I quickly fell in love with the precision, flow, & depth of this method. I was fortunate to receive Classical Pilates training from Romana Kryzanowska, master teacher-trainer & protegé of Joseph Pilates. After teaching for several years, I earned a second Pilates certification from the Pilates Method Alliance and became a certified Hatha/Vinyasa Yoga instructor at Bamboomoves Yoga. As both a movement teacher and practitioner, I have a special interest in the study of Anatomy & Kinesiology. I graduated from Jason Ray Brown’s 108-hour intensive course, Anatomy Studies For Yoga Teachers, as well as Cody Jussel’s immersive Anatomy of Pilates course. These days, in addition to working as a Master Pilates Teacher at Authentic Pilates Learning Center, I teach comprehensive Anatomy workshops to teacher-trainees in both the Pilates and Yoga spaces. I aim to pass on the insight and clarity I have gained in studying the incredible human body in motion.
My professional life is devoted to movement education. I most enjoy helping others to stop judging themselves and start developing smart and effective exercise habits. Start with the basics. Hone your body awareness and explore your alignment. Find power, strength, ease, precision. Breathe. Access your core, initiate your movements from your center. Be patient, and keep a sense of humor!
Whether through private Pilates or group instruction, I can guide you through a movement experience that feels authentic, fulfilling, and gets you the results you are looking for.
Let’s get started.
